What Is Mission Jamaica (MJ)?

A Mission Jamaica trip combines a service project with time for reflection and spiritual rest. It allows a person to experience an international mission field that is close to home, yet far enough away to immerse yourself in another culture for a week. Over 30 years of accompanying our Jamaican neighbors has led to over 35 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregations and several colleges from Minnesota as well as North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina and Illinois.

Jesus said, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
— Mark 12:30-31

Clifton Boys Home, Darlingston, Jamaica (click to learn more) – Boys, 8 to 18, live at this Christian home where safety, education, and Christian values are fostered. At age 18, boys typically leave with renewed hope for a more positive future with an education, job-worthy skills, and what it means to have a loving family.

J’ABODE (formerly Habitat for Humanity) (click to learn more) – There’s always work to be done for housing. Digging footings, pouring concrete, and tying steel reinforcement are some of the tasks MJ does. Missionaries work side by side with the future homeowners.

Westhaven Children’s Home (click to learn more) – West Haven Children’s Home is a residential facility located 30 miles from Montego Bay in Copse, Jamaica. It is home to approximately 80 children and young adults with moderate to severe special needs, including those diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism and other developmental disabilities.  The staff is adequate to meet only the most basic needs of the residents, such as bathing and feeding. The open air dormitories are over-crowded and funds are needed to help with renovations. There is no hot water available.

The government of Jamaica provides only about one-half of the budget necessary to meet these most basic needs. West Haven depends on charities such as CDFI to help bridge the gap in this funding deficit.

Who can go on the trip?

This is an unforgettable opportunity for any age. This year our trip will be focused on Youth + Adults. You will need to be 15 years or older at time of travel to go on this mission trip.

Perhaps you have been looking for that experience to bring you closer to God. Maybe you are seeking, desire more significance, or are being called to make a bigger contribution to the world by helping others. This is a LIVE. LOVE. SERVE. opportunity for you! Haiti is one of the many places FMSC manna packs are sent and distributed, this is also a deeper step from locally packing meals to GO and SEE the meals put to work, helping turn hunger into HOPE.

This trip is a partnered trip with ELIM LUTHERAN, Scandia, MN. Family-Child trips will hope to be planned for future trips.

God’s definition of what matters is pretty straightforward.
God measures our lives by how we love.
